When I run it my system is snappier, and after all the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Defraggler doesn't have "optimize" but in my experience it optimizes as good or better as any of the others all by itself. Some of the paid defraggers are more powerful but they're too complicated for my liking.

I've tried all the free defraggers and a few of the commercial ones and for a free defragger you just can't beat Defraggler. A lot of people like that, but I don't think it really defrags very well unless you use the command prompt. The Vista defragger is mainly designed to defrag behind the scenes. Vista has a lot of defrag issues that aren't there in XP but you'll have those no matter what defragger you use at least with Defraggler you can see the action. The biggest advantage of Defraggler over Windows Vista is you can actually see what's going on. If you check, youll likely find that your drive is 2 fragmented or less. It runs in the background when the system is idle, and it is just as good as any commercially available tool. I am a creature of habit and was used to setting those parameters myself - it comes down to a trust issue with something I can no longer see or control. Every version of Windows since Vista has the built-in defrag scheduled to run weekly by default. I was searching around because as you may know, sometime ago Windows redesigned their defrag program and took away the ability for end users to set certain parameters within the program.

Your comments about the left-over red blocks and the fact that the program does not move the files up to the front is information for me to consider before I download it sounds like the Windows system defrag is still my best bet at this time. The other thing is it doesn't move all files up to the front of the drive as all WinNT systems do, its still like a cullendar. To me thats saying it still needs defragging. After its finished there are loads of red blocks left. The only thing I don't like about Defragger is it shows the drive map with the coloured blocks and the red ones need defragging.

However, solid States are still generally safer for infrequent operations like back ups, because no moving parts can demonstrate no mechanical failure like disk heads colliding with platters, spindle motors dying, etc.Well if nothing else its more graphical than the Windows defrag rather than just colours lines. Platters, while they can demonstrate data rot, if I remember correctly, can be written as many times as you want. Related data needs to be nearby to maximize read efficiency, which is why we defragment. This is not even remotely the case for standard hard drives. So if you attempt to degragment an SSD, you just decrease it's life span by performing unnecessary writes to the NAND. However, NAND memory has to be flashed (cleared) before it can be rewritten, and this operation can only be performed so many times before the drive dies out (this number is in the millions though). It doesn't matter where data is in a SSD, access time is the same. This memory is a non volatile memory called NAND (and more recently 3D NAND).

You don't defrgament solid state drives because data is stored in a type of memory with a maximum number of writes instead of on platters that require disk heads. Compared to solid state drives, hard drives are worse in nearly every way except gb per dollar.
